In October, 1989, the Hazlet First Aid and Rescue Squad initiated a Squad Cadet program. The purpose of the program is to involve Hazlet youths in an organization that encourages responsibility and confidence. The First Aid Squad is a great stepping stone for any high school student looking into the medical or law enforcement fields. However, volunteer work, such as becoming a First Aid Cadet, will also benefit students when applying to colleges. In addition, the New Jersey State First Aid Council offers a scholarship program to active first aid cadets.

Training

The Cadets receive training that includes Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification, as well as the option of becoming an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Eligibilty

The minimum age for cadet eligibility is 15. When a cadet reaches 18 years of age, he or she has the option to join the squad.
  • Many township youths have shown an interest in joining the squad, and the cadet program gives them a good start.
  • Cadets participate in squad functions, and are allowed to ride as a member on an ambulance for most calls.
  • The squad encourages youths to join the program and ultimately become a proud member.
